A six week hands on, project based beginners sewing course.

Teaching the core skills you need to make your own clothes and projects.
Join me in a series of hands on lessons that will teach you the core skill sets you need to start sewing.
I will explain the fundamentals of machine sewing and hand sewing.
Introduce you to the equipment you need to get started, explain all about fabrics, de-mystify patterns, and help you find the right projects for you to make.
What we will cover:
- Lesson 1 – Let’s Get Sewing, An introduction to machines, equipment, fabrics and starting our first course project.
- Lesson 2 – All about Patterns, What is a pattern? Reading a pattern, types of patterns, where to find them, cutting out patters, fabric cutting, making / altering & drafting patterns. We will be cutting out and using patterns for our second course project.
- Lesson 3 – More about the machine: Mechanical or Computerised? Getting to know your machine -in depth on how it works, and all the parts. We will start sewing our course project together.
- Lesson 4 – Machine Sewing Skills: Understanding all the different types of machines, even more stitches! Continue sewing course project together.
- Lesson 5 – Hand sewing skills: Repairs – patching, darning, and creative darning & patching. Alterations – hems and darts, creative patching, embellishment – embroidery, appliqué. Up cycling and recycling.
- Lesson 6 – Finishing your projects: We will complete the 2 course projects, and review all the new skills you have learnt, and plan your next project.
- Review skills learnt (summary handout will be provided), plan your next project.
What you’ll be provided with: All fabrics, thread and patterns you need to complete the 2 course projects.
Hand out notes from each weeks lesson.
What you will need to bring: Your sewing machine, (dont worry if you dont have a machine, I will have ones you can borrow.)
A basic sewing kit of scissors, needles & pins, and a notebook to jot down your key observations,
What you’ll learn: The core skill sets you need to start sewing. You will be able to make bespoke clothes that fit your body, home furnishings that fit your needs, repair, mend and up cycle your favourite things, and embark on creative projects. What’s more they will all be unique!
Who will be teaching? Me, Karen Smith, I’m an experienced sewist, designer and artist, and I beleive that with a core skill set, we can create beautiful and useful things of high quality.
Please note the maximum number of participants for this course will be 6, this is a comfortable number for a group session, allowing you to have a chance to participate in group discussisons, and for me to give each of you a a good level of attention.
